Italy’s Republic Weekend | Explained in Red, White & Green
Festa della Repubblica | Italy's Republic Day
Historical Significance
Festa della Repubblica, celebrated on June 2nd, marks the 1946 referendum where Italians voted, in a first-ever referendum, to establish a republic, doing away with the monarchy of Umberto II, from the House of Savoy, whose reign lasted only 34 days. Paradoxically, the outcome was close, 55% to 45% in favor. Also notable was the geographical division in Italy--everything north of Tuscany was overwhelmingly republican, while the area south was predominantly monarchist. This day has since evolved into a nation-wide day of celebration, honoring Italy's democracy. With a nod to this special weekend in Italy, we bring you our specially-curated offerings of Reds, Whites & Greens.
